A my was surprised to find Monica alone at Café Chocolat when she and Andy arrived. “Where’s Christophe?” she asked.

“He went to buy tickets for a concert tonight,” Monica replied. “A French rap group! I won’t understand a word, but Christophe promised to translate for us.”

“Us?”

“Yes, you’ll come too, won’t you?”

Amy bit her lip. “Uh, I’m not sure. Monica, this is Andy Denker. We met him on a camping trip in Oregon. He’s here in Paris as an exchange student.”

“Hi, Andy. Do you want to come to the rap concert? Maybe we can get an extra ticket at the door,”

Amy looked at Andy and hoped he could see in her eyes that a loud concert wasn’t exactly her idea of a perfect evening.

“I don’t want to intrude,” Andy said smoothly. “Amy and I wanted to hang out tonight, but if you’ve already made plans—”

“I’m sure Christophe can return my ticket,” Amy broke in. “Tell the truth, Monica, wouldn’t you like to be alone with him? You don’t really want me tagging along, and neither does he.”

Monica’s face went pink, but she shook her head. “That’s not true, Amy I’m always happy to have you with us. And Christophe adores you!”

Amy looked at her dubiously. “He does?” All she could think was that the feeling wasn’t exactly mutual.

“Oh yes, he thinks you’re an enchanting girl. He’s always asking about you.”

Amy didn’t particularly like the sound of that, but she wasn’t sure why. Monica looked at her watch. “I wonder what’s taking him so long. He should be back by now.”

Suddenly Amy wondered if Christophe had borrowed money for the tickets from Monica, and if he was leaving town at that very moment. It sounded like the kind of thing a gigolo would do.

But for once, she had misjudged the man. Seconds later Christophe appeared at the café. “I am so sorry, there are no more tickets available for the concert. Perhaps you will allow me to take you lovely ladies to a fine French film this evening,” Then he noticed Andy.

Amy introduced them and said, “You and Monica can go to the film, Christophe. Andy and I have other plans.”

“Oh, and what are your plans?” Christophe asked, seeming more than just casually curious.

Andy wasn’t intimidated by his tone. “I’d like to take Amy on a bâteau-mouche tonight,” he said.

“A what?” Monica asked.

Christophe laughed the laugh that indicated his disapproval. “A bâteau-mouche is an excursion boat which sails the River Seine. It is for the purpose of sightseeing, a very touristic thing to do. No self-respecting Parisian would go on a bâteau-mouche.”

“Well, lucky for me, I’m not a self-respecting Parisian,” Amy declared. “I’d love to take a tour on a bâteau-mouche, Andy.”

“Great,” Andy said. He turned to Monica. “You won’t need to worry, it’s not dangerous. I’ll watch out for Amy and get her back to the hotel safely. And not too late.”

“I suppose that’s all right,” Monica said. “And I would like to see a French movie. Christophe, you’ll translate for me, won’t you?”

Christophe didn’t reply.
